Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does the Foundation grant outside of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Utah.
A: Most of our grants have significant impact in at least one of these states. However, we are open to exploring opportunities with impact beyond these geographic areas. Currently, we do a limited amount of national grants through our Sojourns Program. These grants have impact at a national level and are not focused on a specific geographic area. For example, we do fund some national education and training programs in palliative care but would not fund a direct service palliative care program in a state outside of our 4 state grantmaking area. Please see the grantee spotlight page under our programs for a good example of one of our national Sojourns grants.
Q: Are we eligible to apply for another Foundation grant immediately after our current grant expires?
A: Yes. We do not limit the number of consecutive grants an organization may receive. However, a grantee should contact their program officer prior to submitting another application to discuss their plans.
Q: Our organization’s letter of inquiry was declined. Do we have to wait until next year to apply again?
A: No. The Foundation does not limit the number of times an organization may apply for a grant. But we do encourage you to be strategic and thoughtful about applying, and seek feedback from our staff about our funding priorities and a potential letter of inquiry.
Q: Does the Foundation fund overhead expenses and administrative or indirect project costs?
A: We prefer to support direct project costs, but we also anticipate that some of our grants may include a small line item for overhead or indirect costs. The foundation allows for 10 percent of indirect costs for a project.
Q: Does The Cambia Health Foundation award grants for general operating costs?
A: Generally speaking, no. While we know how challenging it can be for nonprofits to cover these costs, we prefer to support specific projects or programs. However, we continuously assess factors impacting the work of our grantees and community partners and may make exceptions. We appreciate learning about an organization’s most crucial needs and opportunities.
Q: Will I need to include information about other funding sources?
A: Your request will be more competitive if you have pending or committed funding from multiple sources. In both your narrative and line item project budget, please be specific about the project component or components you would like The Cambia Health Foundation to fund.
Q: What is the typical size of a Foundation grant?
A: Each funding program has various factors and elements that impact a potential request amount and timeframe. Multi-year funding requests are considered. We encourage you to contact our staff who will provide additional context in this area.
Q: I’m having trouble entering my tax ID number in the online system. What should I do?
A: If you experience any technical difficulties with the online application system please visit the contact us page for an on-line inquiry option specifically for technical difficulties.
