Over the past decade, Cambia Health Foundation invested more than $25 million in the Sojourns Scholar Leadership Program to nurture emerging palliative care leaders who could transform care for people with serious illness. The results? 108 innovative projects across diverse professions—physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains and other specialists—each pushing the boundaries of compassionate, whole-person care.

108 leaders. 10 years. $25 million invested. Palliative care innovation for families who need it most.

“The ‘secret sauce’ of the Sojourns Scholar Leadership Program was simple yet profound: we prioritized the innovators themselves. We selected great people through an intentional and rigorous application process. Recognizing that growth flourishes in connection, we cultivated a diverse community of leaders grounded in strong relationships. While we created opportunities for collaboration, it was the scholars who brought the community to life and embodied the culture that made this program so impactful.

Their work demonstrates how transformative it can be when emerging leaders have the community, resources and support they need to advance whole-person care. As we reflect on this journey, my hope is that the leaders we have nurtured through this program will inspire others to join them in creating a more person-focused health care system for all."

What is palliative care?

Palliative care is specialized medical care for people living with a serious illness, focused on relieving symptoms, pain and stress to improve quality of life for both the patient and family. It provides an extra layer of support alongside curative treatment at any age and stage of illness.
