Measuring compassionate care in hospice and palliative care

My goal is to create systems that enable HPC clinicians to provide high quality, compassionate care. An HPC clinician-reported experience measure (CREM) of organizational and team compassion will measure clinician experiences of compassion and how they relate to patient and clinician outcomes. Hypothesis: HPC clinician experiences of organizational and team compassion can be rigorously measured. Aims: 1) Develop HPC organizational and team compassion CREM. 2) Pre-test and improve CREM through pediatric HPC cognitive interviews. 3) Nationwide pediatric HPC pilot to estimate CREM preliminary reliability.

“It is my goal to become a national thought leader and expert in compassion science. I will use my Quality Improvement expertise to study and improve compassion at the organization, team, clinician and patient levels in pediatric Hospice and Palliative Care and beyond. I seek to create systems that enable clinicians to provide the most compassionate care possible to ourselves and to one another, thereby enhancing the care we deliver to our patients and their families. I dream of a future where healthcare clinicians know that we work in a compassionate environment- not just that we provide compassionate care, but also that our collective suffering is systemically recognized and alleviated. Creating this environment must be intentional. The Sojourns Scholar experience, and completion of this project, will extend my expertise and influence and serve as a vehicle for me to emerge as a national Hospice and Palliative Care thought leader and expert in compassion within the field.”
