They weren’t at a doctor's office, but it was health care work all the same. Because 80% of what makes up someone’s health is determined outside the health clinic or hospital – things like stable housing, access to food and hygiene care and reliable transportation. When these essential building blocks are missing, good health becomes out of reach for too many people – particularly for communities of color, lower-income individuals and those in rural areas.
This broader view of what it means to be healthy drives both how Cambia employees volunteer and how Cambia Health Foundation invests. When people gain access to what they truly need, entire communities grow stronger.
Investing at the root
In 2025, Cambia Health Foundation invested nearly $225,000 across Idaho, Oregon, Utah and Washington to fund community organizations working to address the social and economic conditions that prevent people from living healthier lives. These investments support:
- Food access initiatives that ensure families and children have consistent, nutritious meals
- Housing support programs that provide stability and reduce the chronic stress of insecurity
- Connection and care for homebound and older adults through food delivery, care packages, and hygiene kits that reduce isolation and support dignity and independence
- Youth development programs that give young people a safe space to learn and grow — with reliable meals, mentorship and caring adults they can count on
The power of showing up
Many of these organizations run on something just as essential as funding: people.Cambia employees have continually stepped up to volunteer for organizations filling critical needs in their communities. They show up to repackage food at local food banks, deliver care packages to homebound adults, pack backpacks with snacks for children from low-income families, mentor students in after-school programs, and so much more. And to make every hour count even more, our Dollars for Doers program turns each volunteer hour into a $20 donation that employees can direct to a cause they care about. In 2025 alone, employees volunteered over 18,000 hours in their communities.
For Tamara, that Saturday morning with BOLD meant more than checking off volunteer hours. "Volunteering alongside my BOLD colleagues is unique because we're not just volunteering together — we're pouring back into the Black community, a community that has always had a deep tradition of allyship and showing up for one another," she reflects. "It's not just service — it's solidarity. We are better together than apart. The more you learn about other people, the richer your perspective becomes — as a colleague, as a community member, as a human being.”
Strengthening entire communities
At Cambia Health Foundation, we hold a simple belief: when people have better access to the resources they need, entire communities grow stronger and healthier.Without programs that address barriers to health — and without the organizations and volunteers who power them — too many people fall through the cracks. We're deeply grateful to the community organizations doing this vital work every day, and to the Cambia employees who extend that work through their time, energy and heart.
