Cambia Health Foundation to Sponsor Community Screenings of Netflix Documentary: End Game

The intimate film highlights the journey of patients and families facing serious illness

PORTLAND, Ore.– Cambia Health Foundation today announced its support for a series of community screenings around the release of the Netflix documentary: End Game, which follows the stories of people and families living with serious illness and their experience with the healthcare system.   The latest project from Academy Award-winning filmmakers, Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, End Game features work being done at the University of California San Francisco and the Zen Hospice Project to help patients live well and relieve suffering through palliative care.

Shown at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and launched on Netflix on May 4, Cambia Health Foundation will host screening events of End Game in different cities across the country to launch community conversations that drive a deeper understanding of what palliative care means; how it serves patients and their families; and how it changes the experience of people dealing with serious illness.

“We are excited to promote this transformative documentary and see enormous potential with these screenings to drive the understanding that palliative care is about living well and to inspire culture change that puts the patient and their family at the center of the care experience,” said Peggy Maguire, President of Cambia Health Foundation, “End Game’s uniquely intimate narrative demonstrates how the quality of life for a patient and their family can be dramatically improved when the aperture of care is expanded to include what matters to them instead of solely focusing on the clinical aspects of serious illness.”

Over the past decade, the Cambia Health Foundation has invested more than $30 million to advance palliative care awareness, access, and quality and palliative care resources in the United States have increased immensely in the last 15 years. However, the availability of such care varies widely from community to community, hospital to hospital, and depending on patient preferences, in the home.  In addition, many patients and health care providers aren’t familiar with the practices of palliative care.  By weaving together real-life stories, End Game captures emotionally charged moments and poignant interactions between compassionate caregivers and their patients and families and offers audiences an opportunity for deeper discussion around what it truly means to live well.
